Julie Dockrell, Professor of Psychology and Special Needs, Institute of Education, London, and Better Communication Research Programme.
Abstract.
Children and young people with speech, language and communication needs raise considerable challenges for professionals in terms of
their identification, the nature of need and effective intervention. There is an important role for psychologists in addressing these
issues. Yet to date the impact of psychological research in English schools has been limited. Drawing on reports emanating from the Better
Communication Research Programme (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-better-communication-research-programme-improving-provision-for-children-and-young-people-with-speech-language-and-communication-needs)
I consider three issues which are potential barriers to psychological research impacting on practice:
1.Terminology and communication – there is no right answer?
2.Challenges of diagnostic categories in developmental research –nature and extent of need may not harness resources?
3.The role of knowledge exchange – tools need to be fit for an educational purpose?
